KIDNAPPERS CONFESS
RANSOM MONEY TRACED.
MAN AND WIFE ARRESTED.
(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Washington, June 9.
Mr J. Edgar Hoover announced tonight that a couple giving the names of Mr and Mrs Herman M. Waley, of Salt Lake City, had been arrested and confessed to kidnapping the boy George Weyerhaeuser recently. They involved William Mahan, owner of a motor car abandoned at Butte, Montana, to-day, containing 15,000 dollars of the ransom money. An intensive search was immediately started for Mahan. The criminal records of the Waleys and Mahan, if any, were not revealed. Mrs Waley was caught attempting to pass a note paid among the ransom money. The Justice Department later announced that 116,000 dollars of the 200,000 dollars paid for the release of George Weyerhaeuser had been recovered. Ninety thousand dollars was found buried near Salt Lake City. An additional 4000 dollars was burned by Waley because “things became too hot.”
