“FREE SPEECH.”

To the Editor. Sir,—At Tuesday night’s meeting of the City Council an application was received from the local Anti-War and Anti-Fascist Council for a permit on behalf of Mr Gerald Griffin to speak from the Post Office rotunda. This •was refused. Is otir City Council trying to emulate the Australian Government, which made itself the laughing stock of the world by trying to prevent Mr Griffin from landing in Australia in order that he might attend an international Anti-War Congress? Other local organizations have been allowed to use the rotunda to speak from. Why the discrimination in Mr Griffin’s case? What has become of our much vaunted British heritage— Freedom of Speech? If this precedent is allowed to go unchallenged, we can expect that in the future if any speakers are likely to disturb the tranquillity of our City Fathers they also will be stopped. AU lovers of free speech should unite in a mighty protest against the Hitler tactics of the City Council. —I am, etc., ANTI-FASCIST.
