PATRIOTISM
DEAN ON FAMILY SPIRIT. “Only a true patriot can be a true citizen of the world,” was the theme of a speech by Dr. Matthews, Dean of St. Paul’s, at the annual banquet of the City of London branch •of the Royal Society of St. George. Dr Matthews was proposing the toast of the evening, “England.” He said his. predecessor (Dean Inge), alone among deans, could do justice to the subject. He wrote a book on England which had gone into several editions, and it had been said, “What do they know of England who only Inge-land know?” (Laughter.) The Royal Society of St. George existed to encourage patriotism, a virtue which was everywhere attacked. Mr H. G. Wells and many other writers traced the ills under which we suffered to patriotism and would have that sentiment expunged from the hearts of human beings. True patriotism was like the family spirit. Tire best citizens were the father and-, mother of the family with family spirit. He believed that that spirit. could be extended to a whole community and to all the nations of the world.
