After a meeting at the Te Awamutu Methodist Church last Saturday, a motor car which had been parked in the church grounds was found to have one wheel sunk in the earth (states the New Zealand Herald). Help was provided to move the vehicle and just as the helpers stepped clear a subsidence occurred. An investigation showed that, apparently before the church was built 20 years ago, an old well had been timbered over and about a foot of earth placed on the cover. The timber had rotted, and the weight of the car evidently caused the subsidence. The well was many feet deep and full of water.
