SOUTHLAND RADIO.
To the Editor. Sir, In the Southland Radio Club’s annual report it was stated tnat the relays from 4YA to 4ZP were not appreciated by local listeners. Now, Sir, this statement is ridiculous, for I have heard many ask why they were discontinued. The sooner the Radio Club realizes that Southland listeners are well and truly fed up with the rubbish broadcasted by 4ZP, and take definite steps to improve its programmes, the better it will be for the club. It was announced in an issue of the Times before the me.eting, that an important announcement regarding the future of broadcasting in Southland would be made. The future of broadcasting in Southland concerns all local listeners. Why the executive attitude adopted by the Radio Club? Is it an attempt to forestall the erection of the promised “SYA” at Awarua ’ Let us hope not, for as “Advance Southland” stated, we get no service from 4ZP—no news, no sports results, no relays (except church), no weather report, and last but not least, no quality. We are all aware that 4ZP is working under difficulties and that they are likely to increase, as the future for B stations is by no means rosy. Either let the Broadcasting Board run the station as a relay station for 4YA—after installing a new transmitter—or hasten the erection of the Awarua Regional Relay, for it is to the 8.8. that we pay for the service we are not getting. ' We hear of 2YA relaying to 2ZF and 2ZD and IYA to IZH, almost every night. Surely our case for relays is of even more importance than that of North Island listeners, who have 1,2 and 3YA plus a number of alternative and B stations within range, while vze are limited to 3YA and 4ZP on bad nights and in daylight. We are only getting an apology for service and it is up to Southland listeners to protest and see that they get what they pay for—l am, etc., “FOR QUALITY.”
