EXTENSION FOR WHOLE YEAR OPPOSED.

Christchurch, June 7.

A remit suggesting that summer time should be continued throughout the year was heavily defeated at the annual conference of the North Canterbury Farmers’ Union. In support of the remit it was argued that farmers had plenty of daylight in the summer, but not enough in the winter; that an extension of daylight saving would give more daylight on winter afternoons; that teams would be able to go home in daylight after wheat sowing anc| other operations and that as farmers had to get up in the dark in the winter, half an hour would not make a material difference. The chief argument against the remit was that some school children already had to leave for sphool at 7 a.m. and' that it would not be reasonable to ask them to get up any earlier. Nine delegates voted for the remit and 24 against. ____________
