HIDDEN MONEY
HOARD OF NOTES IN SAFE. Stories of a woman who died leaving £16,898 largely in house property, and who concealed £19,900 in notes in an old rusty safe in her cellar, were told at Leeds Assizes when her will was disputed. Miss Eva Ogden sought probate of the will of her mother, Mrs Eliza Ogden, of Wisbey, Bradford, who died last year, aged 72. Defendants were Joseph Lofthouse Ogden, of Bray, County Wicklow; Herbert Ogden, of Shipley, and Mrs Alice Jowett, of Shipley, who alleged that at the time of making the will their mother was not of sound mind, memory and understanding. It was stated that under the terms of the will Mrs Ogden left £lOOO to be divided equally among five children, and the remainder of the property to Eva absolutely. Mr Justice Goddard stated that defendants had alleged that their mother was a drunkard, a miser, a bully, and an insane woman. She must have been a thoroughly unpleasant mother, to say the least of it. She bullied her children and was cruel, and sent them out to work at a very early age, taking all their wages from them and giving them very little back. But, however that might be. she could leave her property to whoever she pleased. The jury’s verdict declared the will to be valid.
