STREET LIGHTS.
To the Editor. Sir, —Last winter, it will be remembered, the City Council extended the street lighting an extra hour, from mid-riight to 1 a.m. At the same time I sought to draw the attention of those controlling the lighting to the fact that it would have been much better had the extra hour been granted in the morning for the benefit of those who have to be about in the early hours in pusuance of their livelihood; those specially before my mind were the milkmen. These people have to grope their way round in the dark, while those for whom the <hour extension was granted are lying snug in bed. Surely mid-night is late enough to keep the streets lit up, and the extra hour should be applied in the morning, or at least during the period in each month when there is not sufficient moonlight in the morning. May we hope that the new councillors will view this matter favourably, considering the workers in preference to the pleasure-seekers, and grant an hour’s light in the-morn-ing?—l. am, etc., SOUTH END.
