ADVANCES TO FARMERS
z AID IN SOUTH AFRICA. £25,000,000 IN FOUR YEARS. Nearly £25,000,000 was advanced to the farmers of South Africa by the Government during the four years of the depression. About half of this amount is recoverable and at any rate is well secured. In making this statement in the House of Assembly, the Minister of Finance (Mr N. C. Havenga) said that the Government would do all in its. power to keep the farmer on the land. “I may say” he added, “that the measures we have taken have been more effective than similar attempts anywhere else in the world.” In 1934 the number of farmers who became bankrupt was half of what it was in the most favourable year for the past 15 years.
