BALFOUR NOTES

FAREWELL SOCIAL.

On Friday evening a farewell social and dance was tendered to Mr and Mrs K. Cromie and family, who are leaving the district. Music for the dancing was provided by the local orchestra and Mr W. Weavers was M.C. During the evening songs were rendered by Mr J. McCartney. After supper had been dispensed, Mr J. Hood, as chairman, expressed the regret of one and all at the impending departure of the Cromie family. Mr Cromie had come to the district thirty years ago, married and settled at Ardhissa. The family had been born and reared in the district, where they,, with their parents, were held in the very highest esteem. He then handed to Mrs Cromie a substantial cheque, and conveyed to the departing guests the very best wishes of all for their future health and prosperity. Mr P. J. Mulqueen was the next speaker, and in humorous vein he extolled the sterling qualities of the Cromie family. As honorary handicapper for the Cattle Flat Racing Club, Mr Cromie had proved a very capable and obliging official, while Mrs Cromie’s hospitality was known throughout the district. Other speakers were Mrs M. Rasmussen, Mr J. R. Keown and Mr R. T. Wilson. Musical honours were, accorded the guests, after which Mr Cromie feelingly replied. He thanked all for the gift and accompanying remarks. Plunket Society. Thte monthly meeting of the local Plunket Society was held in the rooms on Thursday afternoon. Mrs Wilson presided. The secretary, Mrs D. McDonald, reported that two delegates and three members attended the annual meeting at Lumsden, and gave a full account of the business done. T(lesdames Marshall and Campbell, Lumsden, and Mrs King, Benmore, were appointed to attend this year’s conference.
