MAURETANIA’S GLORIES FITTINGS GO CHEAPLY. London, May 21. Furniture and fittings which cost £50,000 brought only £3OOO when the costly appointments of the transatlantic liner Mauretania, which is to be broken up, were offered at auction. The sale will cover eight days. The auctioneer, says the Daily Mail, spent five and a-half hours in disposing of the contents of the luxury staterooms on “A” deck, the first-class library, lounge and smokerooms. The lots included walnut renaissance panelling and objects of art A glass centre dome, which cost £3OOO, fetched £7B 15/-. The purchaser said it had been “absolutely given away.” The buyer of the panelling intends to install it in a public building in memory of the proudest merchant ship that ever flew the British flag. A despondent watcher was Robert Hubbard, chief electrical engineer, who joined the vessel as a junior engineer the first day that she was commissioned in 1907. He is the only remaining member of the original crew.
