(Rec. 11.5 p.m.) Rome, April 18. In the Italian tennis championships Canepele, a young Italian, defeated H. Hopman (Australia), 6 —4, 4—6, 6—3, 3—6, 6—3. The Australian Davis Cup players, who practised for the first time to-day, play at Monte Carlo on April 26 and 30 only in the doubles and mixed doubles. Tfience they proceed direct to Eastbourne for the cup tie against New Zealand.
