RAPID DESTRUCTION

OLD HOMESTEAD BURNED. CAUSE OF FIRE UNKNOWN. (Per United Press Association.) Carterton, January 28. One of the oldest houses in the South Wairarapa district, owned and occupied by Mr W. J. Gooding, of Western Lake, was destroyed by fire. The cause of the outbreak is unknown.

Mrs Gooding and a daughter were busy in the orchard adjoining the house when they smelt smoke. On investigating they found the kitchen blazing fiercely. The intense heat and the rapidity with which the flames spread made it impossible to save anything. The fine old homestead had withstood the ravages of wind and weather for over half a century, the main portion of the house being built by Jacob Gooding.
