STRUCK BY TRAIN.

(Per United Press Association.) Levin, January 25. Believed to have been struck by the northbound New Plymouth express at noon yesterday, an elderly Maon, Kanihauia Tungahuru, met his death at a private railway crossing half a mile north of Manakau township. A fatal accident occurred last evening at 8.30 when Helen Carter, the 12-year-old daughter of Thomas Carter, of Hastings, was knocked off her bicycle by a car driven by A. J. Loder. The accident occurred near Whakati, where the deceased was spending a holiday with friends, while she was riding in company with other children. An inquest was opened by the District Coroner this morning into the death of a Maori child Aged 2 years 10 months under an anaesthetic in the Cook Hospital on Wednesday. After medical evidence had been given that the cause of death was toxaemia, the inquest was adjourned.
