TRAFFIC ACCIDENT

YOUNG LADY SERIOUSLY INJURED. A distressing accident occurred in Tay street yesterday during the height of the gale which swept the city, Miss Shelagh Wilson, the younger daughter of Mr E. R. Wilson, of Gladstone, being seriously injured. Miss Wilson, according to an eye-witness, was making her way from the pavement in the vicinity of Messrs Herbert, Haynes’ shop across the street in the teeth of the severe westerly storm and driving rain. It is understood she had her umbrella up and her head inclined so as to avoid the full force of the violent wind and, before the driver of the car, Mr William Swale, of Limehills, who was proceeding east along Tay street, had time to swerve, Miss Wilson was struck by the side of the motor. The impact was severe and it was at once seen that Miss Wilson had been seriously injured. Mrs Birss, of Hastings, a former nurse, who is at present visiting Invercargill, happened to be passing at the time and she attended Miss Wilson, who had lapsed into unconsciousness. Miss Wilson was conveyed at once to the Southland Hospital where it was found that she had sustained a severe fracture of the skull. Inquiries at an early hour this morning elicited the information that Miss Wilson was still unconscious and her condition was grave.
