MAILS BY AIR

QUANTAS SERVICE. NEW PLANE REACHES DARWIN. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Darwin, January 24. Bringing 6001bs of air mail, the new D.H. 86 plane for the Quantas Empire Airways arrived at Darwin yesterday evening with Captain Youell, an Imperial Airways pilot, at the controls. The plane made the crossing of the Timor Sea in three hours thirty-five minutes, averaging 148 miles an hour. Captain Youell said the plane gave no trouble, and left Paris exactly a fortnight ago. The machine is the same as the other D.H. 86 planes which have been delivered to Quantas, except that the tail structures have been strengthened and the wings fitted with the latest “flaps” which reduced the landing speed and allowed a landing to be made on a smaller space.
