THE MAHENO

DEPARTURE FOR MELBOURNE. LARGE CROWD AT BLUFF. The scene at the Bluff wharfside yesterday afternoon when, in continuation of her run to Melbourne via Milford Sound, the Union Steam Ship Company’s trans-Tasman ship Maheno drew out, was even more animated than usual. Taking advantage of the holiday for the trades’ picnic, many people either spent the day at the port town or made a special trip down in the afternoon to witness the steamer’s departure and bid “Bon Voyage” to their friends. There was quite a network of streamers from passengers on board to those on the wharf and, though, owing to the Opawa berthing at the time, the Maheno did not leave her berth till five o’clock—nearly an hour later than was expected—the crowd remained to wave their goodbyes and to watch her move down the harbour in bright sunshine.
