KENNINGTON SCHOOL

JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS.

OPENING CEREMONY.

(From Our Correspondent.)

A fine warm afternoon with a light breeze blowing marked the opening ceremony of the Kennington School jubilee celebrations yesterday, when a crowd of some 200 people assembled in the schoolground to listen to the address of welcome given by the chairman of the Jubilee Committee, Mr W. G. Moncur.

“While you are here I am sure you will find rare pleasure in recalling the happenings, the characters, the childish pranks and the spirit of the days that were,” stated Mr Moncur. “May the jubilee revive all tales told after school and give you an opportunity to live over again those happy days spent in childhood. It is very gratifying to the Jubilee Committee that the results of their efforts have been rewarded in bringing together such a large gathering of former pupils and teachers who, though scattered far and near, have cast aside all thoughts of the depression and have come to join in the jubilee reunion. Naturally the celebrations will appeal stronger to the older generation than to the more recent ex-pupil, but their presence in such large numbers shows their sympathetic co-operation in the opportunity afforded for renewing all friendships formed in youthful days. To-day we have-with us a number of those connected with the school in its early history. To those and the early pioneers the present generation should be justly proud, for have they not well and truly laid the foundation of the district? It is very pleasing to see such a large gathering of parents and well-wishers. Hie support they have given us with our jubilee socials and the keen interest they have taken in all our doings is much appreciated. I have much pleasure on congratulating the school on attaining its jubilee and trust it will go ori to celebrate its centenary continuing to send forth worthy citizens.

The Jubilee Committee responsible for the well working of the celebrations are: Mr W. G. Moncur (chairman), Mr J. McLeod, registrar'; Miss M. McQueen, secretary; conimittee, Messrs A. Sutherland, A. Henderson, W. Henderson, Len Henderson, R. Henderson, J. Ewart, H. Dawson, R. J. A. Clarke, T. Lyall, C. Henderson, J. Alexander, R. McLean, Mesdames W. G. Moncur, J. Fox, E. Riddle, A. Henderson, C. Cloughly, P. Darrah, Misses D. Patterson, H. Lyall.
