TUATAPERE NOTES

swimming. (From Our Correspondent.) The Tuatapere Amateur Swimming Club held a most successful carnival during the week-end. Although the day was cloudy, quite a large crowd was present to witness the events and keen enthusiasm was shown among the competitors. Two races, 40yds breaststroke and 40yds .free style were held, and the antics of some of the members on and off the springboard successfully filled in the tim< between the races. Good entries were received in both swimming events and very good finishes were witnessed, especially in the heats, the results being:— Breaststroke: First heat: B. Benneworth 1, W. Mangan 2, D. Higgins 3. Second heat: G. Mclxiod 1, A. D. McClymont 2, S. Walker 3. Final: Benneworth 1, McLeod and Mangan dead heat 2. Won by inches. Walker and Benneworth were both over-eager and were in the water when their number was called, but this was overlooked by the judges. Free Style: First heat: B. Benneworth 1, M. Young 2, W. Austin 3. Second heat: G. McLsod 1, W. Mangan 2, A. McClymont 3. Final: McLeod 1, Mangan 2, Austin 3. Although getting a. bad start which lost him about two seconds, McLeod made no race of the final and won easily from Mangan and Austin, who had a hard tussle for second. With such a good start for the first meeting, the club will endeavour to repeat the performance at an early date and, weather permitting, the entries will probably be even better next time.
