HOTEL LICENSES
KING COUNTRY. WITHDRAWAL OF PETITION. (Per United Press Association.) Wanganui, November 8. The secretary of the* Maniapoto Maori Council, Mr Wetini Hotu, has written to the Rev. A. J. Seamer, superintendent of the Methodist Home Mission Department, protesting against the secrecy attaching to the withdrawal of the petition recently presented to Parliament allegedly on behalf of the Maori people of the King Country urging the licensing of hotels in that territory. Mr Wetini forwards a declaration signed and witnessed alleging that it is eight years since some of the natives signed the petition then believing it was in favour of prohibition and other names on the petition include a number who have been dead for several years. It is suggested the petition was part of an old one got up eight years ago. Mr Wetini further alleges that promises Were made that land would be bought for the benefit of natives if the license were granted. Another statement signed by _ King Koroki Tawhiao and other chiefs in the King Country confirms their strong opposition to the licenses.
