THEFT ALLEGATIONS

CHARGE OF FALSE PRETENCES.

DEFENCE RESERVED.

(Per United Press Association.) Wellington, November 7.

Obtaining by false pretences large sums of money from the co-director of Organizing Brokers of New Zealand, Ltd., was alleged against Reginald Howan, aged 37, a labourer, charged to-day with causing Edward Nicol Sutherland to pay to Organizing Brokers £379 1/- and £lB9 4/8 by false pretences and with stealing from the company money amounting to £641 5/10. The allegations are that after the formation of the company it was decided to extend the activities to include sharebroking. Sutherland knew nothing of sharebroking and accused represented it was necessary to have funds immediately available to buy shares to be resold at a profit. The company having no funds, Sutherland made advances, and it was alleged accused converted part of the advances to his own use. It was stated that in 10 months Sutherland advanced £1427 19/7, most of which had been repaid, the exceptions being the amounts which were the subject of the false pretences charges. * It was alleged that in the course of his activities accused, in depositing money to the credit of the company, forged the names of C. Green and G. Mclnnes to deposit slips to bolster up his stories to Sutherland. Accused reserved his defence and the case was formally stood down until tomorrow morning for the signing of certain denositions. Mr Page indicated he would then make the necessary commital.
