LUMSDEN NOTES

ANGLING CLUB. (From Our Correspondent.) The Lumsden Angling Club held a competition during the week-end when conditions were not good. T. Soper had a good day, returning a bag of 25 fish, the total weight being 231 b. Included in the bag were two well-conditioned trout weighing 3|lbs. The next best bag was secured by F. Belesky whose total weight was 8 lb lOoz for 4 fish. One fish turned the scale at 61b.

M. Reidy was the only other competitor to weigh in, his result being 3 fish with a total weight of 31b 4ozs. A largely attended meeting of the Angling Club was held on Thursday when it was unanimously decided to protest against the proposal to increase the cost of licenses. The secretary advised that the increased amount would go towards the funds of the Fresh Water Research Committee. Members were of the opinion that the Research Committee’s existence was not warranted. The secretary was instructed to -write to the Southland Acclimatisation Society vigorously protesting against the increase. A meeting of the Lumsden Horticultural Society was held on Thursday when various matters in connection with future shows were discussed. The secretary reported that the recent spring show had been successful, a good profit being shown. It was pointed out that Miss Margaret Dyer had obtained a first prize for fancy work at the Spring Show. On Thursday evening members of the Lumsden Golf Club met to bid farewell to Mr N. Geary who has been secretary of the club for the past two seasons, and who has been transferred from the district. Mr A. Heath on behelf of the club members referred to the able manner in which he had carried out his duties as secretary. He had pleasure in presenting Mr Geary with a travelling rug with the; best of wishes from the club. Several speakers endorsed Mr Heath’s remarks and Mr Geary suitably replied.
