CRICKET

• SOUTHLAND ASSOCIATION.

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE.

The Management Committee of the Southland Cricket Association met last evening, Mr E. V. Mills (vice-president) presiding over the following members. Messrs R. D. Thompson, D. Dobinson, J. Hamilton, H. Grace, H. Drees, G. Agnew, F. J. Twiss and A. J. Hamilton. (secretary).. . It was decided to play the annual Eastern-Town game at Invercargill on Saturday, December :. „ t a The secretary of the New Zealand Cricket Council (Mr W. H. Winsor) wrote advising Thursday, November a, as the date of the annual meeting ot the council at Christchurch. The Central-Western . Sub-Associa-tion was granted affiliation to the association.

C. W. Francis (Invercargill) _ was granted a regrade from senior to junior A, and P. W. Maher (Marist) from senior to junior A. An application for a regrade for D. Morrison (Union) from senior to junior B was referred to the regrading committee, members generally agreeing that Morrison was too good for junior grade. What would be done to decide which teams would be eliminated from the senior competition in the event of a tie in points at the end of the round, was a question discussed by members. Mr Drees and Mr J. Hamilton considered that the association’s intention should be disclosed now in order to prevent any feeling among teams at the last minute. It was stated that two teams might tie for second bottom place, and the question was asked which would be dropped. The chairman said he would prefer to leave the matter over till next meeting as the president (Mr Meredith) had all the particulars. Pressed by members to have the matter decided, the chairman again urged that the matter be left to Mr Meredith to explain. Mr Twiss asked which two teams were likely to be dropped. The resolution concerning the elimination competition did not stipulate which teams would go out. Mr Drees: What teams should be dropped? We would not expect the two top teams to go out. If it is an elimination round, let us eliminate.

Mr Drees added that he would accept the chairman’s ruling to hold the matter over for a week, but he could not agree with it, he said. Transfers' were granted R. Smith, R.S.A. to Invercargill: C. F. Pay, Collegiate to Union; H. L. Rowland, Collegiate to Railway. Reporting as chairman of the grounds committee Mr Mills said he had nothing to report. “The newspapers have had a lot to say about bad wickets at the Showgrounds,” he added. “I don’t know what they have to complain about. I was down there on Saturday and saw two batsmen put on 70 runs in quick time near the end of the game. Whether the wicket had improved by then or not I don’t know. The clubs have themselves to blame. They are responsible for the preparation of the wickets. They’ve played on worse than that one before.”

Mr Grace protested and said it was not a fair thing to put a team which prepared its own wicket on to a wicket which had had practically no preparation at all. The wicket at the Showgrounds was in a rough state and not fit to play on. They were now well on the way with the competitions and as far as he could see not much had been done to prepare wickets at the Showgrounds. The one the ApplebyOld Boys game was played on was practically unplayable. The association should write to the clubs concerned and point out their obligations to visiting clubs, he said. Mr Twiss said he considered that the criticism was unjustified. The wicket hqd received some preparation, but owing to the lack of opportunities (through adverse weather) of getting on to it the wicket had not responded to the rolling. The clubs were willing to do their part. As far as Appleby were concerned he would point out that a fortnight ago the teams using the Appleby wicket had had to cut the grass before playing on it. Mr Robinson said that two clubs were responsible for the north wicket and had neglected it before. They had had trouble before with these teams and the preparation of their wickets. • Mr Agnew said he did not know certain teams had had to cut the Appleby wicket, but he would say that the Appleby Club had never in recent years put so much work into its wicket and ground as it was doing this season. The chairman: Of course when some clubs get beaten they" start complaming about the wicket. They have played on worse. It was decided to write to the Showgrounds clubs and stress the necessity of doing some work on the wickets. FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY. The fixtures for Saturday are as follows:— Senior.—Old Boys v.
