BRITISH COLONIES
FOREIGN IMPORTS RESTRICTED. STATEMENT BY MINISTER. (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, July 16. The Secretary for the Colonies, Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister, informed the House of Commons that the necessary action had already been taken by a great majority of the British colonies which had been invited to introduce a system of quota restrictions on imports of foreign piece goods. According to available information action was taken in the Bahamas, Barbadoes, British Guiana, Cyprus, Fiji, Gambia, Jamaica, Malay States, Malta, Mauritius, Nigeria, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somaliland, the Straits Settlements and Trinidad. Apart from action as to the textile quotas special duties had been imposed in the West African colonies on imports of certain other manufactured goods from Japan.
