RIVERTON BOROUGH

MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting held on Thursday evening was attended by the Mayor (Dr. N. G. Trotter), Crs. J. A. Martin, R. J. Walker, J. Crawford, H. E. Philp, D. C. Robertson and J. A. B. Walker. Correspondence. Mr Gordon Stewart, secretary of the Progressive League, wrote drawing attention to Richard and Church streets, South Riverton. He pointed out that the roadway should be improved, and an electric power pole removed further back, as the corner was considered a dangerous one. Cr. Martin moved that the attention of toe Power Board be called to the matter.—Carried. Mr S. Brewster, lessee of the Pilot Reserve, South Riverton, drew attention to the condition of the fences on the property. Approximately 400 stakes would be required and a quantity of fencing wire. Cr. R. J. Walker said their tenant had carried out a considerable number of improvements since taking up the reserve. The Harbour Committee had paid a visit of inspection, and had found the fences to be out of repair and needed attention. The property was a good asset and contained about ten acres. He was in favour of assisting Mr Brewster, and thus improving their own property. Cr. J. A. Walker supported the previous sneaker, and it was resolved that the Harbour Committee again visit the property and bring forward a report for next meeting. The Unemployment Board, Wellington, wrote with reference to tree-plant-ing, and informed the council that the board were desirous, where possible, to have suitable areas so treated. The work is to be done by relief workers. The trees, it was further stated, would be available to local bodies only on payment of cost of packing and freight. It was resolved to apply for 2000 trees, the Reserves Committee to look out suitable localities where they could be placed. The secretary of the Southland League, Invercargill, wrote asking for a donation towards their funds, and thanked the council for their monetary assistance in the past. On the motion of Crs. Martin and Philp it was resolved to donate £5. Other Business. Cr. Martin, on behalf of the Cemetery Committee, stated that nothing definite had been come to over the proposed improvement to the ground, but perhaps, at next meeting a report would be forthcoming. Reporting for the Reserves Committee, Cr. Martin said he and Cr. R. J. Walker had interviewed the football club and an agreement come to where the club should pay £1 for the use of the recreation area. They were the only club using it this year. He pointed out that the close-boarded fence round the ground was showing signs of decay, and to effect remedial measures which will be necessary in the near future will be somewhat costly.—Adopted. Mr G. Saunders (the surfaceman) submitted his monthly report, which gave details of work undertaken during that time.—Adopted. Cr. Martin gave notice of motion to strike the annual rate, which will be the same as last year—sixpence in the £ on all property in the borough.
