WOODLANDS NOTES
PLAY-READING. (From Our Correspondent.) There was a' good attendance at the fortnightly meeting of the Debating Society on Tuesday. An invitation to a team to visit Invercargill for a return prepared debate with the Marist Debating Club was received. It was decided that the team originally chosen to debate with the Farmers’ Union team represent toe club against Marist. This team consists of Messrs W. Bell, G. Renwick and C. J. Bigwood. The team to meet the team from the local branch of the Farmers’ Union was chosen as follows: Messrs L. Griffin (leader), E. Hargest and J. Trotter. Mr S. August brought with him copies of the very latest English one-act plays, four of which were read during the evening. The first play “The Great Dark” was presented by Mesdames G. Renwick, R. Walker, J. Middlemiss, E. Hargest; Misses M. Kane, E. Barraclough and A. Renwick. »■ The cast in the second play was taken by Messrs C. J. Bigwood, E. Hargest and J. Trotter. Those presenting the third play were: Misses Renwick and Barraclough; Messrs M. P. Schmidt and F. Renwick. The final play which was decidedly humorous, was read by Miss Kane, Messrs L. Griffen and W. Barraclough. Late on Tuesday afternoon a large wooden building standing on the section at the rear of Wyeth’s store, at Woodlands, was totally destroyed by fire. The structure was stoutly built and in former years was used as a stable, but in recent years has served as a garage for the store delivery bus and for T. Lyall’s meat delivery van. Luckily at the time of the outbreak both these buses were out on the runs. I The loft was full of hay. The outbreak I ’was first noticed about 4.30, and there was no hope of quenching the flames. It was owned by Mr C. H. Wyeth, and j was partially covered with insurance.
