RUGBY FOOTBALL

WYNDHAM CLUB. SPECIAL MEETING. (From Our Correspondent.) A special meeting of the members of the Wyndham Football Club was held on Tuesday evening, the Rev. G. D. Faulkner (president), presiding over a fair attendance. The main business was to consider a letter from Mr R. S. Green, secretary of the Eastern District Rugby Sub-Union, which asked whether, in the event of the Albion and Mataura clubs, playing in the Invercargill competition, the club would then be prepared to enter a team in the Eastern first grade competition. The communication also mentioned that the Pioneer Club would enter two teams. The chairman said that it could practically be taken for granted that Albion and Mataura would be permitted to play in Invercargill. He invited the club’s delegate, Mr A. Wilson, to explain to the meeting the position. Mr Wilson said that with the exclusion of the Albion and Mataura teams, the strength of the remaining teams would be on a par with the local second grade team, as Pioneer would be considerably weakened by the dividing of their players into two teams. It apparently was the lean year for football in the Eastern District and he considered the suggestion an excellent one. He strongly urged the players to agree to enter their team as requested. Mr O. Traynor asked whether, in the event of the team playing as seniors this year and football reviving next year, the players of the present season would be classified as senior players and .have to continue in that grade. Mr Wilson said he was unable to express any definite opinion on the matter, as the question had not been discussed by the union. Personally, he did not think the club would be penalized under the circumstances. The president said that they should make it clear that the local club would only consider the question, subject to the strong teams playing in Invercargill. After further discussion it was decided that the club enter a team in the first grade competition subject to the two senior teams being granted permission to play in Invercargill. Mr Traynor introduced the question of the Sports Trust Cup matches, and after some discussion the matter was held over until final arrangements were completed.
