WATER SHORTAGE

POSITION IN BRITAIN POWER TO DEVELOP SUPPLIES EMERGENCY LEGISLATION (British Official Wireless). (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, April 9. A water shortage due to an absence of abundant rainfall in many parts of Britain has caused the Government to introduce emergency legislation. The Minister of Health will present a Bill in the House of Commons to-morrow and the measure will be hastened through all stages. Its provisions will be for a limited period and will enable the existing water undertakings and local authorities to develop for public use whatever water supplies may be found available within their jurisdiction, even to the extent of available water’ sources on private property. In the case of local authorities who do not possess necessary powers for the purpose, provision will be made for such bodies .to proceed without having to promote private Parliamentary Bills.
