Messrs G. McKendrick and H. Hayes, of Auckland, arrived in Invercargill by the mid-day express yesterday and are guests at the Grand Hotel. A Press Association message from Washington states that Colonel Dwight Davis, donor of the Davis Cup, has announced the engagement of his daughter Alice to Roger Makins, second secretary at the British Embassy there. Mr D. E. Caldwell, of Edendale, has consented to nomination as the EasternSouthland candidate for the executive of the South Island Dairy Association. Mr Caldwell has been connected with dairying for a great number of years and has been chairman of the Menzies Ferry dairy factory directorate for a long period. Mr E. W. Mackley, formerly of Invercargill, who is now chief engineer of the s.s. Kekerangu, paid a flyingvisit to his native town yesterday after 12 years’ absence. He is a brother of Mr O. O. Mackley, of the Department of Agriculture here. Mr Mackley was greatly pleased to sec such a marked development in the city, and said that the wonderful pastured growth at this period of the year in the farming districts was surprising. This latter aspect appealed to him very much in comparison with the burnt-up areas in South Australia and Tasmania. He is of the opinion that New Zealand, and Southland in particular, would take a lot of beating.
