THRILLING INCIDENTS
RETREAT FORM FYFE’S PASS. MOUNTAINEERS’ EXPERIENCE. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, April 7. A thrilling incident occurred during the retreat from an attempt to cross Fyfe’s Pass from the Mueller Glacier to the Landsborough Valley, which was undertaken during Easter by Mr A. J. Scott (Christchurch) and D. W. Foster (Wellington). They were accompanied by a guide, V. Williams, of the Mount Cook Hermitage. Guide Williams had a narrow escape when the upper lip of the schrund broke away in front of him as he was cutting steps in the ice above it. The party was on the ice slope and, as all were roped together, nothing could have saved the others if the leader had been swept down.
