RIVERTON BOROUGH
MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL. (From Oui - Correspondent.) The adjourned monthly meeting of the Riverton Borough Council was attended by the Mayor (Dr N. G. Trotter), Councillors R. J. Walker, H. E. Philp, J. A. Martin, J. Crawford and D. C. Robertson. Miss H. L. Hunt applied for and was granted the necessary permission to extend the shop verandah in Palmerston street. The clerk of the Wallace County Council asked that a number of relief workers be placed on road leading to Mr H.' C. Johnstone’s propery, South Riverton. The clerk stated that a number of men were still employed on the drainage scheme in the Waimatuku district, but it was expected that the work would be completed in about three months’ time. It was decided to inform the Wallace County Council that relief workers would be available when the undertakings authorized by the Central Committee were completed. A short discussion followed as to the advisability of forming a road to the borough reserve in South Riverton, and it was eventually decided to take the initial steps to have the work started.
The Public Works engineer wrote in reply to the council’s request to have the boiler at the south side of the traffic bridge removed, and stated that the department would have it shifted shortly. The Southland Motor Association forwarded a number of road signs and these are to be erected between the borough and the Rocks. The sub-committee of the New Zealand Municipal Association forwarded a report recommending that the contributions towards the hospitals and charitable aid boards be paid by the Government.
