WAIMATUKU NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) On Wednesday, March 21, the Presbyterian Church held a social afternoon in the hall. There were a few stalls and competitions, but the feature of the afternoon was a baking competition. The display, in the opinion of the judge, Mrs Anderson, was worthy of a fair-sized town. Prize-winners were:—Oven Scones— Mrs W. Buchanan 1, Mrs A. Lindsay 2, Mrs J. Rance 3. Girdle Scones—Mrs W. Buchanan 1, Mrs A. Lindsay 2, Miss M. Smith 3. Pikelets—Mrs J. Buchanan 1, Mrs D. Buchanan 2, Mrs Evans 3. Egg Sponge—Mrs A. Fraser 1, Mrs Stewart 2, Mrs Rance 3. Butter Sponge —Mrs A. Fraser 1, Miss M. Smith 2, Mrs A. Buchanan 3. Pastry—Mrs W. Buchanan 1, Mrs D. Buchanan 2, Mrs Brown 3. Shortbread—Mrs Galt 1, Mrs Brown 2, Miss McNaughton 3. Coffee Cake—Mrs D. Buchanan 1, Mrs Hayes 2, Mrs Brown 3. Chococlate Cake—Mrs Evans 1, Miss M. Smith 2, Mrs Fraser 3. Collection of Biscuits— Mrs A. X.indsay 1, Mrs Rance 2, Miss G. McKenzie 3. Winners of competitions during the afternoon were: Bullboard, Mrs Galt; nail-driving, Mrs W. Muirhead; stepping, Mrs Stewart. On Wednesday, March 28, the Tennis Club held a concert in aid of its funds. Judging by the size and enthusiasm of the audience the result was most successful. A varied programme had been prepared by the committee and, with the generous help of several outsiders an entertainment of refreshing novelty was given. Supper and a dance followed the concert. Music for the dance was supplied by Mrs B. Smith (piano) and Mr Dillon (violin). The programme was as follows:—“Clementine,” tennis members; solo, Mr F. Clark; scarecrow ballet, six lady members; violin solo, Mr Pettitt; solo, Mr Brown; mandolin trio, Miss Carmichael, Messrs W. Muirhead (jun.) and D. Rance; Highland dance, Miss M. Smith; nigger minstrel show, men members; sketch, “The Hat Shop,” Mrs Stewart, Misses McPherson and Strang; solo, Mrs Toole; mandolin solo, Mr Galloway “Riding Down From Bangor,” Tennis Club; Irish dance, Miss M. Smith; violin solo, Mr Pettitt; short play. “Hope Never Dies,” Misses Strang, McPherson, Mrs Galt, Mrs Stewart, Messrs Southern and Stewart.

Miss Bracks (Dunedin) was the guest of Mrs Galt for Easter. Mr and Mrs W. J. Smith (Timaru) spent Easter with Mrs Stewart.
