THEFT FROM SAFE
LARGE SUM IN SILVER. NO CLUE. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, April 6. Complete mystery surrounds the disappearance of £4O from a safe in the office of the Wellington Show Association at the Easter Show, at about 10.30 o’clock this morning. The money was all in silver coin and it is understood that it had been brought from a bank, which did not open until 10 o’clock. It was then placed in the safe, which was closed, but not locked. The theft, which must have taken place soon after the money was placed in the safe, did not remain undiscovered for long, as a membei’ of the staff had occasion to go to the safe shortly after 10.30 a.m. and immediately noticed the absence of the money. There were few people about the Show at that time, and it is presumed that the thief had gained access to the safe during the temporary absence of the office staff.
Mr G. Mitchell, secretary of the Show Association, refused to discuss the matter further than to admit that a large sum had been taken. A police investigation is in progress.
