Mr J. R. Oliver, of Auckland, leaves for the north by this morning’s express after a brief visit to Invercargill. Mr R. G. J. Wilson, of Wellington, who has been on a visit to Invercargill, leaves by this morning s express on his return north.

Mi William Young, chairman of the Drummond dairy factory, has been nominated for a seat on the directorate of the South Island Dairy Association for the Western District to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of of Mr J. S. Grieve.

Mr J. McGregor, who has been managing the local branch of McKenzie's since the transfer of Mr Harold Morrison, leaves by this morning’s express to assume the managership of the Christchurch branch. Mr F. Lambert, of Auckland, will take over at the local branch.

Mr George Bernard Shaw changed his plans yesterday morning. He abandoned his Nelson visit and left for Kaikoura. He expects to reach Christchurch to-day, leaving there on Monday night for Wellington, where he is to broadcast on Thursday night at 10 o'clock, states a Press Association telegram from Blenheim.

After over 40 years’ service in the Department of Agriculture,. Mr R. Wright, principal supervising inspector of stock for the Wellington district, retired on superannuation on March 31, states a Press Association message from Wellington. Mr Wright is. a wellknown figure among the farming community and stock and station agents, as his official duties have brought him into close contact with settlers and their organizations.

Inspector A. S. Bird, officer in charge of the Timaru police district, who has been advised of his promotion to superintendent, to take effect as from April 1, will not be required to leave the district. Joining the police force in Auckland in 1896, he went to Timaru two years later as a constable. Later he went io Culverden, remaining there till 1911, when he went as a sergeant to Auckland. Eighteen months later he returned to Timaru, in a similar position. His next move was to Petone as senior-sergeant, and in 1923 he went to Auckland as sub-inspector. From Auckland he came to Invercargill as inspector, where he stayed for four years. On the present occasion he has been four years in Timaru.

A retired Scottish educationist, Dr P. Comrie, of Edinburgh, and Mrs Comrie, arrived at Auckland on Monday by the Niagara on a holiday visit to New Zealand, where they have relatives. Dr Comrie, who, in addition to carrying the degrees of M.A., B.Sc., and LL.D., is a Fellow of the Educational Institute of Scotland and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, was rector of the Leith Academy until his retirement last July. Dr and Mrs Comrie are at present on a world tour, and intend to visit the main centres of the Dominion, where Dr Comrie will take the opportunity to get into touch, with leaders in education. He mentioned that the present school age in Scotland is from five to fourteen, but it was hoped shortly to increase the leaving age to fifteen. Mr J. A. C. Allum, who has been appointed sole member of the Central Transport Licensing Authority, is one of the best-known men in business and local body politics in Auckland, his most important public office being that of chairman of the Transport Board. His activities have been varied. He is a member of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce Executive, a past-president of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Association, a member of the Board of Governors of the Seddon Memorial Technical College, a member of the City Council from 1920 to 1929, and a member of the City and Suburban Drainage Board during that time. From 1922 to 1928 he was joint president of the Auckland Winter Exhibition. Mr Allum was born at Blackheath, and had a wide knowledge of engineering before he arrived in New Zealand over twenty years ago. For several years he was the manager of an electrical engineering firm, and about eight years ago he established the Allum Electrical Company, of which he is managing director.
