OBITUARY
MRS JOHN LYNCH. The death occurred at the Gore Hospital on Monday of Mrs John Lynch, a resident of Waikaia in the days of the mining boom. She was a native of Scotland and was 85 years of age. She came to New Zealand with an aunt when 13 years of age, and lived at Dunedin, where she married Mr John Lynch in 1874, the couple taking up residence at Waikaia about 1875, Mr Lynch working as a miner. After a few years they moved to Riverton, where they had the Longwood Hotel, and later took over the Pahia Hotel, near Orepuki. Mr Lynch then purchased a farm, but he died about 1892, and Mrs Lynch sold out and resided at Invercargill, where she brought up her family of two daughters and one son. About two months ago she was visiting her daughter, Mrs R. Shields, East Gore, and slipped on the asphalt, sustaining a fractured hip, which weakened her condition. She was admitted to the Gore Hospital, and, although showing good signs of recovery, later had a relapse from which she never recovered, A brother-in-law of the deceased, Mr R. Thornton, was one of the early owners of what is now the King Solomon mine property. The late Mrs Lynch was a very kindhearted lady and enjoyed good health right up to the time of her accident. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs R. Shields (Gore) and Mrs W. J. White (Browns) and one son, Mr V. Lynch (Dunedin).
