MATAURA NEWS

(From Our Correspondent.)

Mr and Mrs L. Denny, Christchurch, whj have been on an extended motor tour throughout the South Island, are at present visiting Mataura as the guests of Mr and Mrs A. N. Mac Gibbon, Kana street.

Miss J. Coupar, Wellington, is a visitor to Mataura as the guest of Mr and Mrs D. M. Lockhart, Suburb street. There was a large gathering of members of the Mataura Brass Band and supporters in the Oddfellows’Hall, Mataura, on Saturday evening, the occasion being a complimentary social to one of their number, Mr Arthur Duncan, who was recently married. After a lengthy toast list had been honoured the opportunity was taken by Mr J. Storrie to make a i resentation to the guest of the evening, at the same time eulogizing his good qualities as a bandsman. Mr Duncan, he said, had always been enthusiastic in any matters affecting the organization and had been most regular in attendance both at practices and public performances. He hoped the token which he had asked the guest to accept would indicate to him the esteem in which he was held by his fellow bandsmen. The toast was enthusiastically honoured, after which Mr Duncan suitably replied.

The intake at the Mataura Dairy Factory on Monday amounted to 13,900 gallons, which compares favourably with the quantity received on the corresponding day last season. For the period ended December 31 some 24 tons more cheese were made than for the same period last year.
