CATHEDRAL PREACHERS
LORD HUGH CECIL'S COMPLAINT.
NO ACTION AGAINST DEAN.
(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.)
Loudon, January 7.
Refusing the request of Lord Hugh Cecil to take action against the Dean of Liverpool, the Bishop of Liverpool explains that the Dean had expiessed regret for inviting a Unitarian, the Rev. L. Redfern, to preach at the assize service in the morning, which is regarded as one of the regular’ Cathedral services. The Bishop adds: “I fully approved of the sermons of Dr L. P. Jocks at non-liturgical services in the evening as special services to which the Anglican cathedrals can offer hospitality.” The Bishop reminds Lord Cecil of the rebuke which Christ administered to his disciples when they attempted to forbid some who “followed not us.” He adds regarding heretical doctrines that no preacher has transgressed the honourable understanding not to question the Anglican doctrine.
A previous message stated: Lord Hugh Cecil has petitioned the Archbishop of York alleging that persons holding erroneous and strange doctrines and heretical opinions preach at Liverpool Cathedral. He contemplates legal action against the Bishop of Liverpool for permitting Unitarians to preach there.
