BLUFF NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.)

While word was coming over the air from various Dominion stations that games were being postponed in northern centres owing to heavy rain, Bluff enjoyed beautiful weather on Saturday and outdoor sports were carried out under excellent conditions. On Sunday the weather was again good. There was a fair amount of cloud; but warm sunshine was coming through, making the day very pleasant out ot doors. „ , _ With Christmas and New Year s Days now past, Bluff residents can look back with satisfaction on a successful holiday effort. It is regrettable that the local sports meeting with which the Diamond Jubilee Regatta Carnival was to be opened had to be postponed, owing to a break in the weather. I rom then on, however .arrangements were carried out to schedule and onlookers as well as those taking part thoroughly enjoyed the programme. It is pleasing to note that the Carnival Committee came out on the right side financially—though there was no suggestion of money making in the proceedings, the aim being merely to make the port a still more cheerful place for visitors and townsfolk during the holidays. As already reported in the Southland Times, the credit balance is being set aside for use in a future carnival. This happy position was made possible by the generosity of leading residents who donated trophies for the competitions. It is certain also that the Regatta Committee will show a profit on the meeting, due principally to the fact that weather conditions were good for the first day. A very large crowd wap attracted to the port and the tug officials had a busy time with excursionists. As the committee has had many trying experiences in the past, it is satisfactory to supporters to know that the recent regatta was not run at a loss. The Eights. Some criticism has been heard regarding the Regatta Committee’s action in not having the interprovincial eights race rowed on the Tuesday morning while the water was suitable for the event. The main line of argument was that a change in the weather was expected. The latter is true; but on the other hand it should be remembered that the big event was advertised to take place in the afternoon and in the committee’s opinion it would h & ve meant a breach of faith with the public to have had the race rowed before the advertised time. It is known . that several people delayed their visit till the afternoon to witness the contest and had they found that conditions were then suitable while the race had been decided in the morning they would certainly have had just reason to complain The committee’s position was an unenviable one, but it should be admitted the right course was taken.
