RECLUSE’S WEALTH

REFUSES TO PAY UP. London, December 22. The curious habits of a Liverpool debtor were revealed by the Official Receiver in London, when the debtor failed to appear for a public examination. Letters addressed to him as “Mr E. H. Trapnell” were returned marked, “No mister here.” Others addressed “E. H. Trapnell, Esq.” were returned marked, “No squires here.” Letters sent without an appendage were returned marked, “Dishonoured” or “Refused altogether.” The Official Receiver said the debtor, obviously of eccentric habits, was living a secluded, frugal life. His income tax payments were behind hand, and his rates were unpaid. Altogether he owed only a few hundred pounds, but the receiver had traced a banking account containing thousands of pounds, on which he had placed an embargo, hoping to obtain a full list of creditors and to pay all the debts as quickly as possible.
