Clough, the New York scientist, speaking to the American Association of Science, predicted that the remainder of the twentieth century would be unusually warm and dry with a brief period of cooler and wetter weather around 1950-55, followed by disastrous droughts at the turn of the century. He based his predictions on the fact that “four great weather cycles controlled by the sun will synchronize around the year 2000. He said that in time areas near deserts were likely to suffer prolonged aridity, necessitating wholesale migration.
