RIVERTON LEAGUE

MONTHLY MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Riverton League was held on Thursday. On the motion of the chairman, who referred to the loss Mr A. E. Willett had sustained through the death of his wife, a motion of sympathy was carried in the usual way, the hope being also expressed that their old colleague would soon regain his usual health. In the course of his monthly report the chairman said that representatives of the Rocks Association had intended being present to have a chat with members regarding the property and other matters, but they had been unable to do so. As far as he could gather, after an interview with one of the executive, the League would be offered the control of three bathing and one shelter shed at the Rocks. He had nothing further to say as regards the other property, but probably after the New Year a satisfactory arrangement would be arrived at between the two bodies. The report was adopted.

Mr J. A. Walker said he attended the last meeting of the Southland League and gave an account of what had been accomplished. He had brought up the question of the Orepuki shaleworks, and they were awaiting a reply from the Government.—Approved. Mr Stewart (the secretary) reported that a considerable amount of damage had been done to the shelter shed etc., on the north beach. The repairs would, he thought, entail an expenditure of approximately £4.

The chairman said it was to be regretted that the culprits could not be detected, for it was a shame the way the town’s property was defiled. They had offered £5 reward to anyone giving information that would lead to a prosecution, but so far without success. Messrs Angus and Abercrombie also spoke of damage being done to property in other parts of the town, and the secretary was instructed to write the head teachers of both schools asking them to bring before the pupils the necessity of safeguarding public and other properties. The chairman said this would be the last meeting of the year, and it was the usual custom to appoint a sub-com-mittee to deal with any questions that may arise in the interval.

It was resolved that the chairman, Mr Crawford, and Dr. Gordon be elected.

Mr Johnstone drew attention to the parking of cars near the bowling green, South Riverton. He stated that frequently when a match was in progress certain owners watched its progress from the cars and thus hindered the usual traffic. He thought the council’s attention should be drawn to the matter, and the inspector asked to take action. Mr. Alex Evans said the Riverton Bowling Club had had the parking trouble under consideration, and they were taking steps to have an improvement effected.

The chairman said their next meeting would be held after the New Year and he took that opportunity of wishing them all a pleasant time during the festive season. He thanked the members for their loyal and hearty cooperation during the year now reaching its close and trusted the coming one would be prosperous and that better times were ahead, Mr J. A. C. McKenzie, in replying on behalf of those present, complimented the chairman on the business-like manner in which he had presided at the meetings, and the time and energy devoted to the interest of the league.
