DEBT NEGOTIATIONS
ANGLO-AMERICAN CONFERENCE. LITTLE PROGRESS MADE. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) Washington October 27. Rumours that the Anglo-American debt negotiations which have been in progress for three weeks had reached a stage of dissolving and that the British delegation might soon return without reaching an agreement, could not be confirmed, although not officially denied. It is reliably stated that little progress was made. Officials declined to comment further than say another conference would be held next week.
SHELVING OF DISCUSSIONS VIEWPOINTS TOO FAR APART. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) New York, October 28. The Washington correspondent of the New York Times says the British war debt delegation will formally call on Mr Roosevelt within a few days. Administration circles expect that the result of the conference will be the shelving of the debt discussions for an indefinite period. Persons who have been in close touch with the three conferences declare that the viewpoints are so far apart that the discussions are limited to general statements of each nation’s position to the definite offers advanced. The inauguration of the new monetary policy and the strain of the N.R.A. recovery programme made the negotiations more difficult. Pending Soviet recognition, the conversation is held to be another factor in making postponement desirable. It is thought Mr Roosevelt will offer Britain the opportunity to make another “token” payment which, although not satisfactory to London, will probably be accepted as the only alternative offered to avoid default.
