OTAUTAU NOTES

ATHLETIC SOCIETY. (From Our Correspondent.) There was a record attendance at the ball in the Town Hall on Monday evening, held under the auspices of the Athletic Society, and floor space was at a premium. Good music was supplied by the Troubadours orchestra, Invercargill, an extra being played by Miss Renowden. Mr E. Liddell carried out the duties of Master of Ceremonies.

Advice has been received from the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union that the Otautau Athletic Society has been granted two championships for its 1934 sports meeting, viz., 100 yards running championship and 1£ miles cycling championship. In presenting the Herbert Smith Trust Cup at the sports on Monday the president, Mr Sinclair, mentioned that this was the fourth year the trophy had been competed for. The first two years the local school had been successful, while last year it had been won by Waihopi. He congratulated the pupils of the Winton school on their performance and trusted they would be competitors next year. The event had been kept on the programme to foster the athletic sport amongst schoolboys, to whom they must look for the runners of the future. Personal.
