BLUFF NOTES
EUCHRE TOURNAMENT. (From Our Correspondent). Mrs W. Vickery left on Wednesday to spend a holiday at Picton as the guest of her daughter Mrs Watson. Mrs N. C. Nicholas, who has been on an extended visit to her daughter, Mrs C. Duram, Ann street, left by Wednesday’s express for Balclutha. Mr and Mrs R. Brown and son, Ocean Beach, leave by this (Saturday) morning’s express for Ashburton. Passengers by the same train will be Mr and Mrs W. Fewster, Ocean Beach, who will spend a holiday in Christchurch. The weekly euchre tournament m aid of the Dominican Convent funds held in Mr H. W. Campbell’s room on Wednesday evening was well patronized by card enthusiasts, who spent an enjoyable time in a series of well contested games. Play was controlled by Mrs T. Whealler and Mr L. Mortimer. Winners were: Ladies, Mrs L. Mortimer 1, Mrs J. Hotton 2; men, Mr A. Lee 1, Mr W. Aitken 2. The first round prize was won by Mrs H. H. Moss and the second round by Mrs E. Murphy.
Tennis. Although the Ocean Beach Tennis Club has not been formed very long, it possesses several young players of great promise. No entry was sent forward for the competitions this season, but members have gained experience in friendly games with the Bluff club. On Monday last the Beach players journeyed to Clifton where they were entertained by the local club and after a series of enjoyable games emerged victorious by 11 sets (109 games) to Clifton’s 8 sets (98 games). The visitors were welcomed on behalf of the home players by Mr. L. Kelly, Mr G. Johnstone responding for the visitors. Mclvor, 5-7; J. Perry v. McKenzie, 2-7; J. Lewis v. L. Kelly,’l-7; N. Brough v. A. Gregory, 7-6; A. Low v. P. Ross, 7-6; G. Johnstone v. B. McKenzie, 6-7. Ladies’ doubles: Misses D. Mitchell and V. McKenzie v. Mrs Foster and Miss McKay, 7-4; Misses V. Brown and J. Mitchell v. Miss McKenzie and Mrs Smith 7-8.
