LADIES’ NOTES. (By “Sunshine Kitty”.) It is pleasing to note that clubs are commencing the season with a series of friendly games. Invercargill started the bowl rolling by holding an opening day, and an enjoyable afternoon was spent by all. This club is to be congratulated on gaining five new members in one day. Surely a record! . Last week the Te Rangi club held a social afternoon when three rinks assembled at the green. Unfortunately, the weather was not kind, there being a cold wind blowing, which rather spoilt play. During afternoon tea, Mrs Pryde welcomed the visitors on behalf of the Te Rangi Club. Last Tuesday Southland held an opening day, and were favoured with lovely weather. Twenty-six players spent a really enjoyable afternoon. Afternoon tea was served, and Mesdames Holliman, Brown, Hay and Steele spoke on behalf of their respective clubs. There is no doubt that these afternoons help very much in promoting friendly intercourse between clubs, and it is hoped that there will be frequent inter-club games as the season advances. Clubs are reminded that the Rose Bowl challenge competition opens on November 1, and rinks should now be being made up and plenty of practice put in. We are very pleased to welcome several new members and can assure them of many happy hours in store. At the commencement of the season it may be as well to refresh our minds with one or two rulings which, if correctly observed, help considerably in the enjoyment of the game. Leads are reminded that it is usual when stepping on to the mat to play, to hold the bowl in the left hand, and the jack in the right. Roll the jack, and as soon as the jack is straightened, roll the bowl.

It is good for leads and seconds to retire to the bank in ordinary games and then there is no bother in matches. This also saves the greens to a marked extent, and it is the duty of the thirds to measure and count. Skips and thirds, after giving directions, should retire six feet behind the jack to allow a clear view of the head. CENTRAL CLUB, WINTON. OPENING OF SEASON. The 1933-34 season of the Central Bowling Club, Winton, was officially ushered in on Wednesday afternoon last when a record gathering of members and visitors assembled at the C AI S green on the Railway Reserve. Although rain threatened during the later stages of the day an enjoyable afternoon was spent, and eight rinks of lady and gentlemen bowlers took part. For so early in the season the green was in excellent oi;der, and frequently came in for laudatory comment by visiting enthusiasts. The gathering was an exceptionally large one anc / included visitors from Winton, Northend, Waihopai and Invercargill Clubs. After- ’ noon tea was served by the lady members of the club. The president of the club, Mr Frank Tilley, extended a hearty welcome to all on the occasion of the third official opening and remarked that the presence of such a large gathering augured well for the success of the current season. Mr Tilley read a telegram of apology for absence from the clubs centre delegate, Mr T. A. Wallace, of Invercargill, and mentioned the active and kindly interest shown by Mr Wallace in the club’s activities. Mr J. T. Butler, president of the Winton Club, conveyed appreciation to the Central Club for the invitation to be present that afternoon, and also referred in praiseworthy terms as to the state of the green for so early in the season. The patron of the Central Club, his Worship, the Mayor, Mr Thomas Walker, in declaring the green open for play, thanked members of the club for conferring upon him the honour of patron. It would be pleasing to members of the club to hear such laudatory comments about the state of the green, as its preparation displayed the splendid spirit of self-help and co-operation. Mr J.' Hain, a veteran Southland bowler, also added his sentiments, congratulating the club on the excellent state of the green. He wished the club every success during the current season. Miss M. Tilley, daughter of the president, was called upon to roll the first ball.
