OIL FROM COAL
PLANT FOR AUSTRALIA.
50,000,000 GALLONS A YEAR.
(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 10.35 p.m.) Canberra, October 26. Preliminary steps have been taken by the Commonwealth Government to obtain plant at a cost of approximately £10,000,000 for the extraction of oil from coal for the Newcastle and Maitland district. The plant will be capable of producing 50,000,000 gallons of oil a year and will thereby become the nucleus of an essential oil supply in the event of Australia being cut off or blockaded in time of war. The Prime Minister, Mr J. A. Lyons, stated that he had advice from Mr S. M. Bruce that Imperial Chemical Industries, Limited, were willing to cooperate in every way in establishing on a large scale a hydrogenation unit in Australia.
