STORMY SESSION

REICHSTAG FIRE TRIAL. PROSECUTION’S STAR WITNESS. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7.5 p.m.) Berlin, October 26. The evidence of Karwahne, an exCommunist and now a Nazi deputy, provided a stormy session during the fire trial. He is regarded as one of the prosecution’s star witnesses. He said that he and two other deputies were walking to the Reichstag on February 27. Near the Communist rooms they met Torgler and Van der Lubbe together. Herr Sachs, cross-examining, showed that Karwahne was repeatedly selfcontradictory. He remembered many more details than in the initial examination.

Karwahne was perturbed when Torgler asked whether he led the attack on the Communist headquarters at Hanover and supplied anti-Communist material to the newspapers after he joined the Nazis. The president continually interrupted to shield Karwahne who evaded the examination and finally took refuge in a refusal to answer even when the president admitted a question. Dimitroff asked Karwahne many questions which the president disallowed.
