MENTALLY UNFIT
PROBLEM IN BRITAIN STERILIZATION KEENLY DEBATED A NEW ASPECT (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7.0 p.m.) London, October 26. Sterilization of mental defectives continues to be a matter of intensive public debate. Professor Cyril Burt, speaking at the London School of Hygiene, flung a bombshell among the upholders of wholesale sterilization by pointing out that in order to wipe out the evil it would be necessary to sterilize one-fifth of the population. There were, he said, at least 300,000 serious defectives in Britain, but only 60,000 were traceable. The Bishop of Exeter, speaking at Caxton Hall, also put a new aspect on the problem, arguing that if individuals were sterilized for the benefit of the community, people mentally and bodily perfect should be encouraged, perhaps compelled, to have large families.
