WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT OREPUKI. (From Our Correspondent). The monthly meeting of the Orepuki Women’s Institute was held on Tuesday, Mrs Summers presiding over a fair attendance. The roll call, “A spring cleaning hint,” was well answered. Mrs McCaw demonstrated on “Solaqua” work, material for which was lent by Herbert Haynes and Co. A competition, “shortbread,” was judged by Mr Jamieson who awarded prizes as follows: — Mrs Morris 1, Miss McAllister 2, Mrs Noble 3, Mrs McCaw v.h.c. The social competition, which was conducted by Miss McAllister, was won by Mesdames English and McCaw (equal). Progressive League. A meeting of the Orepuki and District Progressive League was held on Tuesday evening, Mr C. O. McKeown presiding over a fair attendance of members. The secretary reported on the matter of the installation of street lights and it was decided that further information be obtained from the Power Board regarding the conditions necessary. It was unanimously resolved that the secretary be instructed to communicate with the Otautau Progressive League expressing regret at its apparent indifference and lack of support when the question of the Orepuki shale works was under discussion at the recent annual meeting of the Southland League. It was agreed that the secretary assemble as much authentic information as possible regarding the establishment and subsequent operations of the shale works and bring it up for consideration at a subsequent meeting of the league. Several members expressed the opinion that although it had been in existence for over seventy years and though residents had been paying rates for practically the whole of this period, Orepuki had probably the worst -roading facilities in the whole of Southland, if not in New Zealand, despite the fact that a practically unlimited quantity of fine gravel was close at hand and could be carted for less than two shillings a yard. It was stated that when, after more than 60 years of existence the Orepuki school was shortly to celebrate its Diamond jubilee, the approaches to the site were still in the same natural state as they were three score years ago. It was unanimously resolved therefore that the Wallace County Council be approached for its assistance in the direction of improving the reading facilities and tidying up the precincts of the township, and clearing out the watertables and maintaining the beach road. It was further decided to bring before the council the urgent necessity of cutting away the bank at Sandy Creek comer in the vicinity of the township. This, it was stated, was probably the most dangerous comer on the RivertonTuatapere main highway, situated beside a narrow bridge and completely obscuring the view of approaching traffic. _ It was also agreed that residents be requested to co-operate with the Cemetery Trust in tidying up the cemetery reserve and eradicating the rabbits which at present are becoming very numerous.

NIGHTCAPS BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute was held on Monday evening, 23rd, Mrs Cook presiding. Mrs Cook and Mrs J. Johnstone were appointed delegates to attend the meet-

ing to form a Southern Federation at Invercargill on November 3. An invitation was received from the local branch of the W.D.F.U. to attend their birthday party. It was decided that as many as possible attend. It was decided also that as many as possible attend the address to be given by Mrs Kelso at Ohai. The roll-call, “Uses of Tea-leaves,” was well responded to. The competition “Best posy of flowers in institute colours,” resulted: Mrs Thomson, 1; Mrs Lobb, 2; Mrs Cook, 3. For next month the following programme was decided upon: Roll-call, “What I like for tea on a cold night.” Competition: “Best mystery parcel worth 6d.” The demonstration was left for Mrs Pointon to arrange. The hostesses will be Mrs Burgess, Misses D. Rushton, Docherty, Hazlemore and Spence.
