TECHNICAL COLLEGE

BOARD OF MANAGERS. MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Southland Technical College Board of Managers was held last evening. There were present: Messrs J. H. Reed (chairman), D. Galbraith, A. J. Service, W. Carswell, W. G. Tait and W. McChesney and Miss McLeod. The monthly report of the principal (Mr C. A. Stewart) stated:—“Roll numbers and attendance during the month have been about normal and call for little comment. Losses from the evening school have been quite balanced by new enrolments; in fact we have been able to revive one class discontinued earlier in the year. It is well that pupils leaving a secondary school now should realize that they must immediately join evening classes if they wish to keep their free places alive for next year. During the month Mr Maloy’s duties have been very satisfactorily carried out by Mr J. D. McKenzie. On Tuesday, October 10, Mr Cushen was able to take a party of his engineering course boys, some 14 in number, over H.M.S. Dunedin at Bluff. A member of the engineering staff conducted them round the engine rooms, etc. and made the visit most interesting and instructive. They were enlightened on many matters connected with their regular class work in engineering practice, heat engines, electricity etc. By courtesy of Captain Hayard and Captain Harboard the party was also shown over the Harbour Board’s dredge, and saw the diver dressing and descending. As the visit was made on our games and drill afternoon Mr Cushen and the boys lost no time from class work. School events now in prospect include term examinations, athletic sports, swimming sports (for boys and for girls), an evening concert (on Friday, November 3), our annual exhibition of work, and the break-up. I would recommend that the prize-giving ceremony be tentatively set down for the afternoon of Thursday, December 14, and that the same amount as last year be set aside for the purchase of prizes.” Messrs Galbraith and Service were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month.
